AERODROME SAFETY
SAFETY AT HAWKES BAY & EAST COAST AERO CLUB- WE NEED YOU!!
Safety Management System
A definition taken from the CAA: ‘A Safety Management System (SMS) is a formal risk management framework to improve safety. Under an SMS, organisations have systems for hazard identification and risk management, safety targets and reporting processes, procedures for audit, investigations, remedial actions, and safety education. The size and complexity of an SMS should be scaled to suit the size of the organisation.’

Reporting
For our SMS at the airfield to be successful we need robust reporting and for people to feel comfortable using it. We have a safety occurrence report form below which is easy to fill online and we hope that you will all feel comfortable using this. The purpose of the form is to keep track of and analyse any trends regarding safety.
If you do see anything around the airfield that you think is a safety concern, we need to know about it. This could range from operational aspects to flying incidents. Please do come and see us and we can also fill out a form on your behalf.
Just Culture
We want to in-still a ‘Just Culture’ in our aero club. Just Culture supports learning from events through enhanced sharing of safety information to prevent future accidents.

Analysis of internal occurrences has identified that runway incidents involving aircraft lining up on a runway with other aircraft on final, aircraft back tracking or crossing the runway with aircraft on final and loss of separation on final are our most commonly occurring incidents.
For this reason, we have now implemented a mandatory final call.
Ongoing Development
The Aero Club will continue to develop the SMS, and we can best do this when everyone contributes. We will update and develop further documents as required so watch this space…
